WILLOW BASKET MAKING
Tutor: EDDIE DOUGLAS
In this class you will construct a round market basket with a handle over the top and a round wood basket with grips on the sides.
Eddie will also discuss the planting and growing, harvesting and processing of willow suitable for baskets.
Eddie is a self-taught basket maker who began basket making as a hobby in Golden Bay more than 40 years ago. At that stage there was no basket willow grown in New Zealand and Horticultural Research brought the varieties in from England. Since then he has grown his own and does his own processing. “Basket making is just so beautifully simple,” he says, but in his definition of a craft, “there’s more than meets the eye”. He has one basic rule – never take shortcuts!
He has been fortunate to have a range of experiences making props for Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and Hobbitville as well as Vintner’s Luck. He also weaves with supplejack and makes Christmas trees from grape cuttings.
