Book Arts
Class Full, Waitlist Applies
Phil returns for the 2024 school to present a week of new ideas and skills for those who join him. He brings fresh ideas and approaches to making bound books. Phil will let us in on his plans soon.
If you are a beginner or an accomplished book maker, this course is for you.
Phil will guide you through the processes involved in creating art in books. Sign up early so you don’t miss out on the class.
Next year at Wānaka, we will be doing three projects. We will be re-visiting the origami style ring binder folder that we did not get around to last year. We will also be doing an onion-skin binding, and a full leather, case bound book with meeting -guard structure and leather onlays.
Phil first took book binding lessons in Bath, England in the binding studio at the Bath Artist Printmakers. At the same time he completed a short course at Brunel Technical College in Bristol. From there he moved to Lyon, France, where he studied under Myriam Bassett, a former pupil of Sun Evrard, at the Ecole du Livres Jean Grolier.
On moving back to Australia he worked in several places as a professional binder before, some 10 years ago, setting up his own Melbourne School of Book Binding where he both teaches and provides book binding services.
